YES!!! I met my first patient!
Last week Friday, we had our lecture again about vital signs. Our CI wants the discussion to be interactive so he wants us to act like real nurses. The scenario --- he will be the patient and one of us would be the nurse in-charge. And surprisingly, I was the one who’s going to act it out! That’s a big pressure for me ‘coz our grade would depend on how will I carry out the procedures properly. Yeah, some of you are already raising your eyebrows right now because taking vital signs is easy task but taking my professors’ VS is much different! He’ll observe every move I make and even my body mechanics while taking it. I was trembling while cleaning the thermometer, forgot to ask his previous BP reading and I just smile the whole time. At least, my CI praised me for being humble, caring for my patient and established my rapport. After acting out. He explained again all the rationale.
Then, he asked us if we’re ready to take VS of the real patients…. We just smiled and nod but Mr. Blacer’s face is serious and he’s not joking… Wow!!! Is this for real???? We’re going to meet our very first patient!!! I was the second student to go to the patient’s room. At first I was nervous but after entering the patients room I was calmed and there, I took his VS. I was glad I got it correctly because my CI’s eyes were keenly observing what I’m doing. I’m more confident now than before.
It's a happy experience for me. But one of my friends, Tin, had a very unforgettable one. Tin’s patient were grumpy and she got Goosebumps when the patient said ---
“Hindi niyo lang alam, Patay na ako!!! Dalawang araw na akong patay!”
whoah! @_@ And that patient keeps on telling her this while the patients’ face become gloomier than before.
Thank God I’m not assigned to that patient ‘coz that experience may haunt me forever. First Patient thinks she’s dead…
